Properly Remove Pixologic ZBrush on macOS - Correct Uninstall Instruction

Lately the update of Pixologic ZBrush has been released, supporting the latest macOS. I guess many users have been using it. Meanwhile you may still be using the older version and getting on the path to join them, so this article can be quite helpful - before you install the latest version of Pixologic ZBrush, a complete removal is suggested. And since it could be a bit complicated to fully remove Pixologic ZBrush, I’ll explain the how this application is installed and how the system manages the files under the following subtitles.

Download Mac App Remover

A macOS App contains several types of files, among which these 5 are relatively important:

1. plist files

plist files are the Mac version of preference files. Similar to .ini files on Windows. They contain the preferences for a particular program. For example the bookmarks.plist would contain your bookmarks.

2. framework files

A framework is a hierarchical directory that encapsulates shared resources, such as a dynamic shared library, nib files, image files, localized strings, header files, and reference documentation in a single package. Multiple applications can use all of these resources simultaneously. The system loads them into memory as needed and shares the one copy of the resource among all applications whenever possible.

3. dylib files

Most of an app’s functionality is implemented in libraries of executable code. When an app is linked with a library using a static linker, the code that the app uses is copied to the generated executable file. A static linker collects compiled source code, known as object code, and library code into one executable file that is loaded into memory in its entirety at runtime. The kind of library that becomes part of an app’s executable file is known as a static library. Static libraries are collections or archives of object files.

4. kext files

Kext files are essentially drivers for Mac OS X. "Kext" stands for Kernel Extension; kext files "extend" Mac OS X's kernel, the core part of the operating system, by providing additional code to be loaded when your computer boots.

5. Unix executable files

Executable files contain code that is run when the file is opened. macOS applications, scripts, and macros are all considered executable files. Since these file types run code when opened, unknown executable files, such as those received as e-mail attachements, should not be opened.

During the use of an macOS App, more files can be generated in different folders:

  • 1> logs files
  • /Library/logs
  • ~/Library/logs
  • 2> Application Support
  • /Library/Application Support
  • ~/Library/Application Support
  • 3> Preferences files
  • /Library/Preferences
  • ~/Library/Preferences
  • 4> Daemons/Agent
  • /Library/LaunchAgents
  • Library/Application Support
  • 5> PreferencePanes
  • /Library/PreferencePanes
  • ~/Library/PreferencePanes
  • 6> StartupItems files
  • /Library/StartupItems
  • ~/Library/StartupItems
  • 7> Exetensions files
  • /Library/Extensions
  • /System/Library/Extensions

If you understand the above knowledge, you’ll know how to completely remove Pixologic ZBrush by locating and deleting the associated files/folders.

How to search for files on macOS? Through either the Finder or the Spotlight. Then you need to make sure whether they belong to Pixologic ZBrush. If they do, delete them. In general cases, macOS doesn’t display the hidden files/folders as default, but you can still eliminate them by using the “ls -al” and “rm” commands. Most users, however, are not tech-savvy enough to fulfill such tasks. So you may ask: is there a simpler way to remove Pixologic ZBrush?

Remove Pixologic ZBrush through MacRemover’s One-Click Uninstall Features

Download Mac App Remover
  • 1> Download MacRemover.
  • 2> Run it, select Pixologic ZBrush in the list of installed applications, then click the “Run Analysis” button.
  • 3> MacRemover will analyze the installation information of Pixologic ZBrush.
  • 4> After the analysis, click “Complete Uninstall” to perfectly remove Pixologic ZBrush.

Manual Removal & Auto Removal - How to Choose?

  • 1> If you are a sophisticated user of macOS and know well of its operating theory, then you can consider manual removal.
  • 2> If you are a newbie to macOS, then a third-party removal tool is suggested. Because these tools can automatically analyze & recognize the files which need to be deleted, and save a lot of time that you can spend working on your Mac.

It is possible to change the location where ZBrush will write temporary files when compacting memory. When working with ZBrush, it is often necessary for the operating system to manage very large amounts of data with frequent read and write access. (Approximately 4-8 GB of data.) If your system drive isn’t the fastest on your computer, you can set ZBrush to use a different drive instead. This is done by editing the ZBrushScratchDiskPath.txt file. On Windows this file is located in the C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\ZBrushData2020 folder or C:\Users\Public\Documents\ZBrushData2020 folder. On Mac OSX it is located in the Users/Shared/ZBrushData2020 folder.

    Important!

Note: on Mac OSXyou need to specify the full path in the correct form. For example, if you want to have your scratch disk on an external hard drive called “Datas” and inside a folder called “ZBrushScratch”, the path is not /Datas/ZBrushScratch/ but /Volumes/Datas/ZBrushScratch/. Also, any spaces should be preceeded with a backslash \.

You can find the correct path by using this simple method:

    1.  In Finder, go to Applications>Utilities and start the Terminal app. This will open the Terminal window.
    2. In Finder, navigate to the folder where you want your ZBrush Scratch Disk to be and drag the folder icon onto the Terminal window.
    3. The correct path to the folder will be displayed in the Terminal window. Copy the path exactly as it is to the  ZBrushScratchDiskPath.txt file. (You can click+drag to highlight the path in the Terminal window and copy it to the pasteboard.)

If you are Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives for a computer optimized for ZBrush, these are the Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives elements to keep in mind:

    • ZBrush runs the same on Macintosh and Windows. Choosing one or the other is a personal choice.
    • A fast processor with multiple cores is a key item because ZBrush is only CPU based. The more powerful, the better.
    • You must have enough memory to handle the system and other background applications in addition to ZBrush itself. If your intent is to create complex models with many millions of polygons, aim for at least 16 GB of RAM and a 64-bit version of your OS.
    • ZBrush is highly optimized and writes a large number of temporary files in order to ensure fast performance. Depending on your model, this can quickly reach several GB of data. An SSD drive for ZBrush and its virtual memory files will provide the best results. You can save costs by having an additional mechanical drive to save your work on.
    • A Wacom (or compatible) pen tablet with a preference for professional models will provide you a better accuracy in your brush strokes and increase the artist feeling. We do not recommend tablets based on N-Trig technology, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives, which is an entirely different protocol and not fully compatible with ZBrush.

    Moving ZBrush Between Computers

This article applies to ZBrush/ZBrushCore 2018 and above.  Earlier versions are no longer supported.

Moving your software between computers is quite simple.

Note:  Single-User licenses allow two concurrent activations, provided that you never actually run both copies at the same time.  If you want to have ZBrush on a second computer, you do not need to first deactivate it from the original machine.

Note:  When you reinstall your operating system, your machine's digital thumbprint will change and ZBrush will see itself as being on a different computer.  This is also true with major operating system upgrades, such as from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or from macOS 10.12 to macOS 10.13.  In these cases, please follow all the instructions on this page, including Deactivation.

    Follow these steps:

First, Deactivate from your old computer:

    1. Go to My Licenses and log in with your Pixologic ID.
    2. Next to your Key, click the Request Deactivation button.
    3. On the next page you will see a list of the activations currently counting against your serial number.  Next to the one for the computer you are removing ZBrush from, tick the box in the Repair column.  For the reason, just state that you are moving ZBrush to a new computer.  Click the Request Deactivation button.
    4. On the next page, click the Ableton Crack Features Deactivation Request button.  You will then be taken back to the main My Licenses page.
    5. If you have the ZBrush to KeyShot Bridge, you will need to follow these same steps for its license as well.
    • If your old computer does not have internet access, your old computer won't be able to detect the deactivation from the My Licenses page.  In that case (unless the computer is no longer functional) you must also go to that machine and use the Pixologic License Manager to deactivate the copy from there so that ZBrush knows it's not allowed to run any longer.  This program is found in your ZBrush installation directory.
      • With ZBrush 2018 and 2019 this program was called the Pixologic Deactivation Manager instead.
    • Note:  For any computer that is online, the My Licenses system can be used to remotely deactivate that copy of ZBrush and return its activation to the license pool.  The next time that copy of ZBrush is run, it will automatically detect its change in activation status and disable itself.  This is very convenient for situations such as if you're on a trip and you suddenly need to install ZBrush on a computer, or for IT managers that need to re-image multiple systems on a regular basis.  However, it should NEVER be used as a method of cheating the system to get more activations than your license allows.  There are anti-fraud algorithms in place that look for unusual activity and your license can be suspended if the system detects abuse.

Next, on your new computer, install.

Download the most current installer from theMy Licensespage, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives.  Because we have moved downloads to that system, it is no longer necessary to keep your delivery email on record or to have download links reset before you can download again.  Also, My Licenses will always give the most current version of the installer.

It is importantthat you be logged into the computer under an Administrator account when installingandactivating ZBrush.  After activation, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives, any user on the computer will be able to run ZBrush.

Manyantivirus programsare known to interfere with successful installation and/or activation.  This includes (but is Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives limited to) Windows Defender, McAfee®and Norton®.  It is recommended to temporarily disable or suspend your antivirus software before installing ZBrush.  You may enable it again after activating ZBrush.  (Your firewall typically does not matter and can be ignored unless it blocks ZBrush from communicating with the Pixologic servers when activating.)

    Finally, launch and activate.
    We strongly recommend online activation.

    • If your computer is online:
      1. Enter your Pixologic ID and click Log In.
      2. Your default internet browser will open to a page which displays your active license(s), including the number of available activations for each item, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives.  For most users, you will have only one license displayed.  Simply click the Select button next to the desired license to use it for activation.
        • Some web browsers (especially Firefox) do not allow themselves to be launched by ZBrush.  If your computer is connected to the internet and no web page opens after clicking the Log In button, first check to see if the window opened in the background behind ZBrush.  If it did not, close ZBrush and change your default web browser to a different one, Image Viewers Archives s as Edge or Safari.  Then restart ZBrush to try again.

      3. On the next page you will be asked for a description of the computer where your license is being activated, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives.
        • The default will be the same computer name that has been assigned by Final Cut Pro X 10.4.8 crack Archives operating system.
        • Whatever you enter here is what My Licenses will list for this activation in the future.  Because you are allowed to have two activations per Single-User license (or more with Volume licenses), Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives, having a specific name will help you know one activation from anther when viewing your My Licenses page.
        • Please use a meaningful, machine-specific description rather than a generic one like "Workstation."
      4. After submitting this description, you will receive a "Congratulations!" message about the activation.  At this stage, you can close your browser page and go back to ZBrush.
      5. In ZBrush, click the "Check my License" button to have ZBrush query the licensing server, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives.  Within moments, the activation should be verified and confirmed by a new window.
      6. After clicking the OK button, ZBrush will start normally and is ready to be used.
    • If your computer is not connected to the internet, click the "Offline Activation" button and follow the on-screen instructions.  You will be given a file to save to a portable media device which you can then take to any computer that does have internet access.  There, an activation file will be created, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives, which you will need to take back to ZBrush to complete the activation.
    • If you get a Corrupt License error, Pixologic ZBrush For MAC & Windows Archives, see this article.
